Scullers

Single scullers in private boats are reminded that the Club’s insurance does NOT cover their boat at any time. In order to boat from Vesta it is necessary for scullers to have third party cover. This is included with your ARA membership or your policy for the boat (if you have one). It is also a requirement that the sculler concerned adheres to the Water Safety Code.

Crew Boats

Our insurance policy is only valid if boats go afloat in accordance with the Water Safety Code. Your attention is drawn to copies of this which are displayed in the Club. Conditions of the Code include the correct lighting of boats when rowing after dark.

Boating After Dark

Rowing after dark is not recommended (as per ARA guidelines). However, if the need arises to go out after dark, boats MUST display a white light bow and stern and when accompanied by a launch, that is to be lit in a similar fashion. It is the responsibility of the crew and the squad coach, if present, to ensure that these requirements are met.

In addition to correct lighting of the boats, they must be steered/coxed by approved individuals (see below) or accompanied by a coach in a launch.

Steering of Boats

The Tideway is a hazardous place during hours of daylight and conditions are only worsened after dark. It is therefore imperative that the risks are minimised wherever possible. To this end, the Rowing Committee has decided to issue a list of those individuals who are, at present, permitted to take out Club boats unaccompanied - THIS IS AT ANYTIME. Others may be added to this list upon application to the committee. Those not on the list may use boats only when accompanied by a launch. Anyone, improperly, using a boat which has not been allocated to them and that they have not had permission to use, do so entirely at their own risk.

Approved Coxes/Steerspeople

In order to maintain acceptable safety standards it is necessary to have a boat under the command of someone capable of controlling it. Therefore, boats going out unaccompanied must contain members from the following lists. If a boat is accompanied, novice coxes/unapproved steerspeople may be used. In order to have as many people as possible authorised to take out boats, we will be organising training from our most experienced coxes and bow steersmen. Please look out for notices or ask your squad coach.

There is a list of those authorised to take out Club boats unaccompanied.

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE ALL THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS WILL MEAN THE WITHDRAWL OF THE RIGHT OF THE CREW TO USE CLUB BOATS AND SCULLERS TO POTENTIALLY LOSE THE RIGHT TO BOAT FROM VESTA ROWING CLUB.

Our aim is not to unnecessarily restrict the use of Club equipment or rowing activity. We aim to provide an environment in which we may all enjoy our rowing in as safe a way as possible. We will, however, enforce the requirements above to ensure that all our members are safe on the water. Please help us by adhering to this notice and support us in this aim.
